If you’re a teen in Connecticut and you happen to send a “sext” message to a friend, you are at risk for some serious penalties. One of which includes being placed on the sex offender registry. For a sext message. Of yourself. HUH!? The proposed bill that is going up for review on Monday would reduce the charge from a felony to a misdemeanor when the sexting is between minors of 13 to 18 years of age who are in some sort of relationship.
“At times, minor children do foolish acts without appreciating the consequences of their actions,” said Rosa Remimbas, a Republican state representative.
John Danaher, commissioner with Connecticut’s Department of Public Safety, said the bill “strikes a good balance between asserting the illegality of the activity while, at the same time, removing the age population from the serious consequences of being required to register as a sex offender.”
Perhaps putting young kids who send pictures of THEMSELVES to others on the sex offender registry was a little bit of a harsh step and that’s why the Connecticut legislature is reconsidering. Instead, why not wait until you’re 18 kids, then you can send all the dirty texts you want hassle free.
