When sex is featured in video games, it’s usually not much more than “the stabbing motions of button mashing,” as described by Christopher Williams, the developer of a new video game called Heavy Rain. When there’s a sex scene in Heavy Rain, it’s not meant to be gratuitous or to turn the player on. It’s actually designed to make you feel uncomfortable. In the game’s sex scene, the main character Madison is forced to strip for a grimy mob boss, evoking feelings of disgust and pity. The game’s developer believes that really feeling these uncomfortable situations from the main character’s perspective helps you connect with the story and the protagonist. Breaching the gap between sex for pleasure and sex for effect, Williams uses sex much like dramatic movies use sex – to help the viewer further connect with the plot and characters.
Heavy Rain seems more like a “choose your own adventure” style video game where players are expected to connect with the main character and navigate through her world as her. The video game goes as far as to explore female feelings and sex in a non-sexy way… but rather uncomfortable sex, helping you become the main character. Leisure Suit Larry this is not….
